I was watching The Pursuit of Happyness DVD, when I noticed Will Smith solving the Rubik's cube. It reminded me about one of my students, she is gifted in solving the rubik's cube. It's just amazing how they solve the cube. I decided to research more on the cube and the following are my findings.
The Rubik's cube is named after the founder who is a Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture. It is an ingenious invention by him in 1974. It became so popular that in the eighties that one in three houses in Europe had a cube. They have sold abt 300 million cubes till date worldwide which include imitations as well. The sale of the Rubik cubes actually helped Hungarian economy come out of communism. That is how successful the invention is.
If you could solve the cube, you are looked upon as a genius. Studies show that most people give up after meddling with the cube. However it still has the same appeal as it was first created. You see a unsolved cube, you have the tempatation to solve it.
There is a group called Speed Cubers which do speed solving. They can solve the cube in seconds. The world champion for blind solving is Leyan Lo, and he could solve the cube in about 2 minutes blindfolded after studying it for a minute.
It is just amazing that this invention create many possiblities. Well I'm going to get my own cube and learn the art of solving it. You can grab one for a dollar at convenient stores.
